Scene 1. Int. A bar in London
Pete, a junior employee of a law firm, is with Cindy and Shezza, two receptionists from the law firm. They are having a drink after work.
Pete
So it was near Christmas. Your parents already had two daughters and they were hoping for a son. So then you were born and they did not have any names for a girl. However Cinderella was on at the local theatre, so they decided to call you Cinderella.
Cinderella
I know it sounds ridiculous but that is what happened. At least that was what I was told.
Pete
Well it is something different. At least you weren’t named after one of the ugly sisters.
Cinderella
My mother died when I was young and my father remarried.
Pete
So do you have a wicked stepmother?
Cinderella
No, she is a nice stepmother. She looks after Dad well. Dad is working abroad so the three of us share the house.
Pete
So are your sisters like you.
Cinderella
No, they are not as pretty for a start. If you are called Cinderella you have to live up to the name. They have dull jobs. Anna, the eldest, is a teacher and Belinda is a nurse.
Pete
Do you have a fairy godmother?
Shezza
She does not need a fairy godmother. She can do her own tricks. Would you like to see a trick?
Pete
Yes please !
Shezza
You can do the drink trick. Pete would like that one.
Pete
So what is the drink trick?
Sheeza
It is a good one.
Cinderella
The drink trick is to turn an empty glass into a full glass just by the power of thought.
Pete finishes his drink.
Pete
Here is the empty glass.
Cinderella
It is a difficult trick so it also requires a twenty pound note.
Pete
I have one here.
Pete produces a twenty pound note from his wallet. Cinderella lays it down next to the empty glass on the table.
Cinderella
Just place the note on the table, Now it requires a lot of concentration. It is a matter of positive thinking and believing that it will happen. Without the belief it will not happen. So close your eyes and concentrate on the idea that when you open your eyes the glass will be full.
Pete
Okay. That sound easy.
Cinderella
So close your eyes and think about the full glass.
Pete closes his eyes and Shezza gets up and goes off to the counter. Cinderella watches Pete to make sure he does not open his eyes.
Cinderella
Keep your eyes shut and think about the full glass.
They sit for a moment with Pete’s eyes firmly closed. Cinderella looks over towards the counter.
Cinderella
Okay. Open your eyes.
Pete opens his eyes. The glass is still empty.
Cinderella
See.
Pete
Nothings happened.
Cinderella
Exactly nothings happened. You did not believe enough. Close your eyes again and this time concentrate. Believe that the drink will appear. Imagine the drink being there. Believe it will happen.
Sheezza returns with a tray of drinks. Quietly she replaces the empty glass with a full glass. She also replaces Cinderella’s and her own drinks.
Cinderella
Now open your eyes.
Pete
It worked.
Cinderella
It is just a matter of belief. If you believe it can happen.
(Note - Pete ends up going ou with Cinderella's sister Belinda rather than Cinderella - see story previously posted)
